The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
