Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
